Hearing “no”: what it means, and what it does not

Sometimes screening ends with a no. It can feel personal, but the reasons are almost always about design or timing.

Part 1Design, not judgment

A study built for a narrow group has to turn away many people, including many who would have been fine. The rule is about the question, not the person.

Part 2Timing

Sometimes a person is excluded now because of a recent medicine or procedure. Those rules can change later, which is a question for the study team.

Part 3What people often do next

Some ask the team why the rule exists, others look at public registries for different studies, and many simply talk with their own doctor about what is next.

Part 4A gentle note

If a no brings up worries about your health, please talk to your doctor. We cannot give medical advice, and for an emergency call 911.
