Age, condition and medicine rules: the three most common criteria

Most eligibility lists lean on three things: how old someone is, what condition they have or do not have, and what they take. Here is how each tends to be written.

Part 1Age

An age range such as 18 to 65 is applied exactly. Studies of children and older adults usually have their own protections and rules, which the listing describes.

Part 2Condition

A study may need a condition to have been diagnosed for a minimum time, or may exclude people with certain other conditions that could muddy the question or add risk. It is written as a precise statement.

Part 3Medicines

Medicine rules can name a drug, a type of drug, or a timing such as no use in the last month. They are there to keep results clean and to avoid known interactions.

Part 4Reading with care

If you are unsure about a term, writing it down and asking a doctor or the study team is a good habit. We cannot say how a rule applies to any person.
